I’ve been either sewing or doing handwork pretty much all of my life and thoroughly love doing it. I can remember doing hand embroidery on pillow cases at the age of about five or so for my mother. Well, that must have started it all.
I also remember teaching myself how to sew clothes for my Barbie doll when I was fairly young but for the life of me I don’t remember how I accomplished that since I didn’t even have any patterns for doll clothes.
I sometimes wish I still had some of these clothes but then again, maybe it’s a good thing that I don’t since they probably weren’t the best sewn Barbie clothes one could make. At least I had fun making them back then. Barbie didn’t seem to mind at all either. She was just glad to be wearing something.
I’ve mostly taught myself or learned from others how to do several types of sewing such as tailoring, alterations, making clothes for both me and my family, designing and making doll clothes for instance and the list could go on and on. What I really enjoy the most I think is being a designer when sewing Heirloom items such as smocked little baby dresses, bonnets, daygowns and dedication dresses for instance.
Then just before the year 2000 arrived I finally decided to try quilting. Actually, I got talked into doing it and have never regretted it. I had always thought that a person was pretty crazy to take fabrics, cut it all up and then sew it back up again. I thought, what a lot to go through just to get a quilt! I was also told that it was something I would get addicted to and well…they were right!
I found out that I simply loved it a lot and probably for now do mostly quilting. There’s such an enjoyment that comes from turning several fabrics into this wonderful quilt that you can curl up under and enjoy or give it to that special someone you have designed and made it for and see how much they now enjoy cuddling up under knowing you have made it just for them. Plus, you were able to enjoy the fun of being a designer in the process that is all your own since each quilt is a one of a kind quilt design when you are finished.
I also enjoy doing many other types of crafting such as knitting, crocheting, smocking, hand embroidery, silk ribbon embroidery, Brazilian embroidery, Hardanger embroidery, tatting, cross stitching etc. as the list goes on and on. I also find gardening, plant-based cooking with more of a gourmet type flare to it, making my own bread and other such enjoyments a delight.
Its always fun to share with others how to do the different things that I’ve either taught myself to do or have learned how to do from others. I certainly give our Heavenly Father all the credit for the talents that He has given to me.
Through the years I have taught many children and adults to do different crafts or how to sew, quilt or do handwork. Some of the children I have taught were home schooled children. I feel it is very important for children both boys and girls to learn how to do at least some simple sewing and cooking so they can be prepared with enough knowledge of these things that may be of great help in their later years if the need arises.
I hope you will find something of value and enjoyment for you here on this site as you look around that can make it easier for you to learn or do something that you might have always thought you might want to do but didn’t quite know where to start.
Please enjoy your stay and come back again soon.
